post–grad:

i was terrified of doing this in undergrad, and now that i’m asked to write them fairly often, i am fondly exasperated when my students don’t know how to ask for them. obviously there’s no single way, but here’s the way i usually do it.

THE FIRST EMAIL

  • should be short & should mainly be asking whether they’re willing to write you the letter
  • should provide only the basics - what the professor absolutely needs to know.
    • the position you’re applying for
    • when the letter would be due
    • optional: if you’re afraid they won’t remember you, a quick line identifying yourself & your relation to them
  • i like to provide an “out,” in case they don’t want to or are unable to write the letter

SAMPLE
Dear Professor X,
I’m applying for a job as an English tutor at the University Student Resource Center, and was wondering if you’d be willing to write me a letter of recommendation for the position. [optional identification: I really enjoyed taking English 300 with you in Winter 2016, and I’m hoping to develop and pass on those skills to other students through this job.] The letter would be due by September 1st - I know you’re very busy, so I completely understand if you’re not able to write one.
All best,
Your Name

THE SECOND EMAIL

  • they said yes!! amazing.
  • this one can provide a little more information – a link to the job posting, if there is one, or you can write a quick summary of the position, plus a sentence or two about why you’re excited/interested in the job.
  • also tell them where to send the letter!!
    • directly to the recruiter for the job
    • to you, to add to your application packet
    • upload to an online LoR service or to an application website
  • 99% of the time folks are fine with receiving electronic copies, but if they need to mail a hard copy, let them know up front.

SAMPLE:
Dear Professor X,
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. Here’s the link to the job listing; the letter should be sent as a .pdf file to the email address at the bottom of the page, anytime before 9/1. Thanks again – I’m hoping that this job will provide me with some teaching experience and the opportunity to work on my own writing. Please let me know if you need any more information!
Best,
Your Name

WHEN TO SEND A FOLLOW-UP

  • these stress me out real bad but here’s the deal: most professors have a very shaky relationship to deadlines (especially when they have half a dozen more important ones than your piddly LoR).
  • the upshot: do not be afraid to nudge them.
  • often they need the nudge and are appreciative of it.
  • when that nudge happens is up to you and how much room you’ve given them before the deadline, and it’ll look different depending on your relationship with that professor.

GRAD SCHOOL LETTERS

  • i offered to send my professors essays that i had written for their classes, especially if i had taken those classes more than a year before asking them to write the letter, just so they could refamiliarize themselves with my work. you can also offer to send them your writing sample, if you haven’t already asked them to look it over for you.
  • honestly i’d recommend asking for these in person bc it’ll give you a chance to talk to them about their grad school experience and your own hopes & aspirations, which will help them write a more personal, fleshed-out letter.
  • one important note: if this letter is intended for use in grad school applications, do not stress out if it’s a little late. most programs do not care, and pretty much all of them accept late letters without a problem. your professor’s ability to meet deadlines does not reflect on you, and professors are intimately familiar with running late on LoRs. they really honestly don’t care. as long as it gets there before too long, you’ll be fine.
  • thank-yous are up to you! keep in mind that many departments have policies about gift-giving. i did give thank-yous to my three major letter writers, but they were handwritten cards & homemade cookies, nothing store-bought or expensive.

Desk organization

  • Get rid of all trash and clean your desk daily (3 minutes max)

On your clean desk you must have:

  • Cup or bottle of water
  • Snack
  • Paper, pen and whatever else you might be virtually using
  • Clock or timer

Avoid having too many things on your desk at once. Keep only the essentials.

Studying material organization

This includes:

  • Texbooks and notebooks
  • Stationery

Make sure to arrange all of your textbooks in a way that you can read all of the titles and grab what you need quickly. Also, hold pens and pencils separately and keep a box for your stationery (such as post its).

Bag organization

  • Clean your bag(s) at least once a week and get rid of trash.

Make sure you are only carrying the essentials, such as:

  • Phone
  • Wallet
  • Chargers
  • Keys
  • Sunglasses/glasses
  • Snack

If you spend a lot of time on public transportation, make sure you always have a book with you.

Bedroom organization

  • Instead of cleaning your bedroom for 6 hours once a month, clean a little bit of it for 10-15 minutes daily.
  • Store different things on different places. I recommend having a box for every kind of object.
  • Instead of having lots of papers with you, keep them on your computer.

I hope this little post was helpful. I know there are a lot of points that weren’t covered. I will write another post on organization asap.

Behind in School? Get Back on Track in One Day

maybach–malik:

future-slp:

This post is for those times when you feel completely overwhelmed & incapacitated by all of the school work and life responsibilities you have to do but just don’t know where to start! This might happen after procrastinating and avoiding studying for a week or maybe after you’ve been sick and unable to do anything except cough and sleep. This is what works for me, and I hope it can help you!

image

1. Clean Up Your Study Space

  • Take 30 minutes to an hour tidying up your work area. My desk is in my office, so I not only clean up my desk, but also tidy my room and put away anything out of place.
  • Set an alarm so you don’t get distracted or carried away. The goal is to take care of a lot in one day, which can’t happen if you start to reorganize your closet ;)

2. List Assignments by Due Date

  • Make a list of any assignments which are overdue.
  • If you have a medical reason for missing these assignments, print off or get the paperwork needed for late submissions (or contact professors/ teachers via email) so you won’t receive late marks.
  • Now, make a list of all assignments coming up in the next two weeks in order of due date.
image

3. Create Assignment Folders

  • Count the number of assignments you have, and take out that number of folders. If you don’t have folders, that’s okay- you can use binder or paper clips.
  • For each folder, label it and then put the assignment instructions, research, notes, and anything else you have that is relevant to the assignment.
  • If you think it will take 15 minutes or less, do a bit of research for the assignments, print the research off, and
  • Store or stack these assignment folders by due date.

CHECK IN: If you have any overdue assignments which you don’t have a medical note for, stop here and complete them now. Start with the shortest ones and continue to the more time consuming assignments. You might be staying up very late today, but you can do it!

4. List Tests and Exams by Date

  • Make a list of all midterms, quizzes, and exams coming up in the next two weeks.
  • On this list, include all you know about the content of the quiz. For example, write down the lectures and textbook chapters you will be studied on, as well as any key concepts or questions you think will be covered.
image

5. Create Course Priorities for Studying

  • Start with the tests & assignments that are coming up first!
  • Then, look at how you are doing in each course. For example, in two of my courses I have grades back that are above 90s and one in which I have an 85. My other two classes I have an 80 and in my fifth class I have no marks yet.
  • After I finish my assignments due this week, I will start working on my Anatomy & Physiology course work and studying first because I haven’t handed anything in yet so it is the most important right now! Then I’ll study for the midterm coming up in the class where I have an 80, and so on.

Now you have a clean room, know what you have coming up in the next two weeks, have all assignments organized, and have a prioritized list for studying! Feel better? I know I did! All in a day’s work :)

This is what ive been looking for. Uni sucks.

Makeup Starter Kit Guide

makeuploversunite:

So i get a lot of questions about basic makeup items to have for beginners so this will give drugstore & high end options to help start your collection! I know going into a cosmetic store can be overwhelming so here is a little guide :)

Face Primer. This step isnt necessary but it’s good to have a base before foundation either moisturizer or primer or both!

  • For oily/combination skin i recommend Phillip’s Milk Of Magnesia (not a beauty product but very popular in the beauty world as an affordable primer to help control oily skin), Neutrogena Shine Control, Benefit Porefessional, Smashbox Photofinish Light.
  • For normal/dry skin i recommend Benefit Porefessional, MAC Prep & Prime Skin Base, Monistat Anti Chafing Gel (not a beauty product but has the same ingredients as many high end primers, great at giving skin a smooth base) or Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer.

Foundation/Tinted Moisturizer.

  • Foundations for oily/combination skin: Revlon Colorstay (medium/full coverage), Estee Lauder Double Wear (medium/full coverage), NARS Sheer Matte (light/medium coverage), Lancome Tient Idole Ultra 25 Hour (medium coverage), Tarte Amazonian Clay (full coverage), Kat Von D Lock It (full coverage)
  • Foundations for normal/dry skin: Loreal True Match (medium coverage), Loreal Magic Lumi (medium coverage), Neutrogena Healthy Skin (medium/full coverage), Revlon Nearly Naked (light/medium coverage), Lancome Tient Miracle (medium/full coverage), NARS Sheer Glow (light/medium coverage), Urban Decay Naked (medium coverage)
  • Great Tinted Moisturizers/BB Creams - Loreal BB Cream (oily/combination skin), Garnier BB Cream (normal/dry skin) Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, Smashbox BB Cream.

Concealer.

  • For face (full coverage) - Revlon Photoready, Covergirl Smoothers, Hard Candy Glamoflauge (sold at Walmart only), MAC Studio Finish or Kat Von D Tattoo concealer.
  • For under eyes for a brighter effect - Loreal Magic Lumi, Maybelline Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser, MAC Select Cover Up concealer.

Powder.

  • For a matte look: Rimmel Stay Matte, Maybelline Dream Matte, MAC Studio Fix, Makeup Forever Duo Matte.
  • For a more natural look/not too matte: Revlon Nearly Naked powder, MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural, Benefit Hello Flawless, any translucent powder (white but applies clear)

Blush.

  • Brands that make good inexpensive blushes: Sleek (UK), Wet n Wild, ELF, NYX & Milani
  • Brands that make good higher end blushes: Tarte, NARS, MAC, Illamasqua & Benefit

Bronzer:

  • Good matte bronzers (good for contouring): NYC Sunny, Benefit Hoola, Too Faced Chocolate Solieil
  • Good bronzers with shimmer: Wet n Wild Princess bronzer, Physicians Formula Bronze Booster, MAC Refined Golden, NARS Laguna or Tarte Park Avenue Princess

Lip Products.

  • Best lipstick brands: Wet n Wild, NYX, Revlon, Loreal, Maybelline, MAC, NARS, Buxom,
  • Best lip glosses: Revlon’s Colorburst lip glosses & Revlon’s Super Lusturous lip glosses, NYX’s lip glosses, Maybelline Color Sensational lip glosses, All MAC lip glosses, Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish & NARS Lip gloss.

Brow Products.

  • Good brow pencils: Rimmel Brow Pencil, Maybelline Define a Brow, MAC Brow Pencil, Anastasia Brow Pencil
  • Good Brow Powders: Wet n Wild brow kit, ELF’s Brow Kit, Anastasia Eyebrow Duo, Benefit Brow Duo. But any matte eyeshadow will work well :)
